Former Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara was the tallest player in NHL history during his career, and he helped lead the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Final three times during his time with the club, taking home hockey’s ultimate prize in 2011.
Chara, who retired from the NHL in September 2022 after stints with the Washington Capitals and New York Islanders, continues to stay in tip-top shape by participating in marathons and Ironman triathlons.
However, he was recently involved in a bicycle accident in his native Slovakia
Emergency crews were called to a cycling trail near Beluša, Slovakia, on July 29 after Chara collided with a 56-year-old runner during a training ride.

The runner was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation after Chara requested medical assistance by calling an ambulance.
Police said the pedestrian entered Chara’s path, leading to the crash. Because both parties reached an agreement at the scene, authorities determined no further investigation was necessary.
Chara himself offered the following update via the Slovakian outlet Športový Čas.
“Last week, I collided with a runner on the cycle path near Beluša. It was a situation that I could no longer avoid or prevent. Emergency medical services and the police were immediately called to the scene. I provided first aid and subsequently cooperated with all authorities.”
