Former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has emerged as a prominent candidate to become the Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator.
The Cowboys named Brian Schottenheimer their new head coach Friday night. He and Eberflus have each worked as assistants with the Colts and Cowboys but their times there didn’t overlap.
Eberflus was the Cowboys’ linebackers coach from 2011-15 and added the title of pass game coordinator from 2016-17. He then joined the Colts, where he served as defensive coordinator for four years.
The Cowboys cannot hire a coordinator without first satisfying the Rooney Rule, which requires two minority candidates to be interviewed.
The Bears fired Eberflus the day after Thanksgiving following the latest in a litany of clock management issues, this time coming in a loss to the Colts. He went 14-32 as the Bears’ head coach. The Bears replaced him with coach Ben Johnson on Monday.
The Falcons interviewed Eberflus for their vacant defensive coordinator job last week and had also been linked to the Bengals. Both teams have since picked different coordinators.
