Former Bears assistant coach Eric Bieniemy’s wife was shot at their home in Virginia on Sunday, ESPN reported, and has been hospitalized with “serious injuries.” She was in stable condition Monday morning.
Bieniemy, who was the Bears’ running backs coach last season, was with the Chiefs for training camp in Missouri. His wife Mia, 57, was at the couple’s home in Ashburn, Va.
Police were alerted to a shooting at the Bieniemy home near the Commanders’ practice facility, where Bieniemy was offensive coordinator under coach Ron Rivera in 2023.
The Chiefs said in a statement they were aware of “the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” but nothing else.
Bieniemy, 56, has long been regarded as one of the best assistant coaches in the NFL. He was the Chiefs’ running backs coach from 2013 through ’17 before taking over as offensive coordinator from 2018 through ’22, during the emergence of quarterback Patrick Mahomes and two of the franchise’s Super Bowl wins.
After spending 2023 with the commanders and 2024 as UCLA’s offensive coordinator, he joined Bears coach Ben Johnson’s staff and was instrumental in the team finishing third in the league in rushing last season. He went back to the Chiefs as offensive coordinator after they parted with former Bears coach Matt Nagy.
