Fired New York Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand has quickly found a job.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport revealed that the Atlanta Falcons “are hiring Tanner Engstrand as offensive passing game coordinator, sources say.”
“The former Jets OC had multiple options and has been a popular name in recent days. Engstrand will join coach Kevin Stefanski and the new offensive staff in Atlanta,” Rapoport added.
The Jets fired Engstrand last week. Initially, head coach Aaron Glenn wanted to keep him on the staff, but with lesser responsibility. However, Engstrand no longer wanted to stay as the OC if he wasn’t calling plays. Thus, a firing or a mutual parting of ways took place, depending on where you heard it from.
Jets Are Making a Gamble With OC Swap
The green and white offense struggled mightily in 2025.
They finished in the bottom four in total net yards per game (263.6) and points per game (17.6), per ESPN.
The Jets’ passing offense was the worst in the league. Gang Green finished with just 2,385 passing yards this season. The next closest team had 400 more passing yards (Cleveland Browns).
It was well documented how ineffective the Jets’ defense was at creating takeaways (four). The next closest team had 10 takeaways on defense (Washington Commanders).
However, the Jets were among the league leaders in giving the ball away on offense. According to ESPN, the Jets finished with 23 giveaways, which ranked tied for 28th in the league.
Those are all bad numbers, but were they Engstrand’s fault or that of his players? In fairness, the green and white had an underwhelming supporting cast, specifically at the quarterback position.
Could any OC have survived under those circumstances? The beauty, as always, is in the eye of the beholder.
The Jets obviously think they can improve, or they wouldn’t have stripped Engstrand of play-calling duties. With Aaron Glenn’s job on the line, he will lean on experience over upside.
Three of the five names the Jets have interviewed for the vacant OC role have tons of coordinator experience at the NFL level. Greg Roman is one of the finalists for that role with the green and white.
Top Social Media Reactions to Engstrand’s New Gig
“Falcons get a good one in Tanner Engstrand, with Kevin Stefanski wisely adding him to the staff as the offensive passing game coordinator, sources say. Great communicator and a very well-liked coach in both Detroit and New York,” ESPN’s Peter Schrager posted.
ESPN radio host Jake Asman said Engstrand is “One of the first Titanic survivors to wash up along the shore.”
Jets analyst Dylan Tereman said, “That didn’t take long. I’m sure Engstrand will do well under [Kevin] Stefanski.”
“Scooped up immediately by Stefanski. Good career move for Tanner and happy he landed on his feet quickly,” Tony Vegas said on social media.
“Kevin very quickly putting together a quality offensive staff. Dude was very well thought of in Detroit and it’s hard to pin the Jets offensive troubles just on playcalling. Optimism continuing to grow,” radio producer Orin James Romain said.
