The former chief of Jeffco Public Schools, who was fired less than a month ago, has died amid an unresolved child pornography investigation, sheriff’s officials said.
David Weiss was fired by county officials in December in connection with that investigation.
Jefferson County sheriff’s officials said he was with family in Maryland for the holidays when he died.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland reached out to Jefferson County sheriff’s officials on Wednesday to let the Colorado investigators know they were conducting a death investigation into Weiss.
The former chief’s cause and manner of death were not available Thursday morning.
Sheriff’s officials said the investigation into Weiss’ possession of “child sexual assault material” will continue. No other information was available Thursday.
According to the district’s website, Weiss worked in public education for 20 years. He previously served as the principal of Westgate Elementary School for five years, as a high school assistant principal for 4 years and as a middle school math and science teacher for 8 years.
