Fight in downtown Gilroy ends in serious injuries, arrests

GILROY — A brawl earlier this week in downtown Gilroy ended in serious injuries to three men and the arrest of five others, according to authorities.

Officers were dispatched to Monterey Road and East Sixth Street around midnight Monday for reports of a fight, the Gilroy Police Department said in a news release.

“Upon arrival,” police said, “officers found three adult male victims who had sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being attacked by a group of suspects.”

Police said officers identified, located and arrested five suspects who were trying to leave the downtown area.

An investigation revealed the three victims were assaulted and robbed by the suspects, who are all believed to be associates of a criminal street gang, police said.

“The suspects repeatedly hit and kicked the victims before stealing their jewelry and cash,” police said, adding that the stolen property was found on the suspects and returned to the victims.

The suspects — identified as three 19-year-old men, one 20-year-old man and one 29-year-old man — are all being held at the Santa Clara County jail, according to police.
