RICHMOND — A driver died in a fiery crash early Monday after losing control and striking the center barrier of a freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened about 2 a.m. on westbound Interstate 80, just east of the Carlson Boulevard exit, CHP spokesperson Officer Adib Zeid said. The driver died at the scene.
Authorities did not identify the driver immediately pending confirmation of their identity and notification of next of kin.
According to Zeid, the car lost control for some reason and struck the barrier that separates the eastbound and westbound directions of the freeway. The car then hit other objects near the barrier and became engulfed in flames, Zeid said.
The driver was unable to get out.
The CHP is investigating why the driver lost control but did not have any theories early Monday. The agency closed all but the far left lane on I-80 until 4:30 a.m.
