Emeryville: Suspect arrested in hit-and-run that left woman in critical condition

EMERYVILLE — A suspect was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run that left a pedestrian in critical condition Wednesday afternoon in Emeryville, according to authorities.

Around 3:40 p.m., a woman was walking in the rear parking lot of the BevMo at 5717 Christie Ave. when a driver hit her from behind at high speed, the Emeryville Police Department said in a news release. The driver did not stop at the scene.

The victim was taken to an area hospital, where she remained in critical condition Thursday.

Officers used license plate reader cameras to track down the suspect’s vehicle and a picture of the driver, police said. The vehicle was later found unoccupied in Oakland.

Officers kept the vehicle under surveillance and took the suspect into custody when he returned to it around 7 a.m. Thursday. He was identified as a 40-year-old Oakland man.

After the suspect was identified in video surveillance footage and interviewed by detectives, he was booked into the Santa Rita Jail on a hit-and-run charge, police said.
