Electric vehicle manufacturer to open new Milpitas facility

A popular electric vehicle manufacturer is on track to operate a new Milpitas facility by the end of the year.

The Milpitas City Council green-lit an agreement with Rivian earlier this month allowing the company to add a new location at 755 Yosemite Drive near Interstate 680.

The facility is intended to serve as a location for inspections, service, sales, leases and a pick-up area for vehicles. Similar Rivian facilities in the Bay Area can be found in San Francisco and north San Jose.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rivian to Milpitas,” Mayor Carmen Montano said in a recent press release. “This investment highlights Milpitas’ strategic location, skilled workforce, and business-friendly environment, making it an ideal destination for leading-edge companies shaping the future of mobility.”

Rivian designs and manufactures electric vehicles, including pick up trucks, SUVs and commercial vehicles. The company is headquartered in Irvine and employs 4,000 people in California, according to the release.

“We’re excited to establish a presence in Milpitas and contribute to the region’s legacy of tech leadership,” said Hannah Steinweg, public policy manager for Rivian. “This expansion allows us to continue developing groundbreaking solutions for electric mobility while creating high-quality jobs and supporting the local community.”

The partnership fulfills part of Milpitas’s plan to encourage more electric vehicles and green manufacturing companies in the city by 2040. Providing more opportunities for economic development and job growth are also priorities for the Milpitas City Council.

“This collaboration with Rivian represents a win-win for Milpitas,” said City Manager Ned Thomas. “By bringing a high-profile, sustainable business to our community, we are not only creating jobs but also securing long-term economic benefits that will enhance the quality of life for our residents.”
