RICHMOND — A 77-year-old man was beaten unconscious when he confronted an alleged package thief Wednesday in Richmond, police said.

The incident happened just after 2:45 p.m. in the 1000 block of Lassen Street, said Richmond police spokesperson Lynnelle Sanchez. The victim was walking his dog when he spotted a man in his early 20s who was trying to steal packages from a neighbor’s porch.
Sanchez said the victim confronted the suspect, who then attacked him, leaving him unconscious.
The victim was taken to an area hospital. He reported that his cell phone and digital camera were missing, Sanchez said.
An investigation is underway into the incident. Sanchez said detectives are searching for surveillance video and speaking with neighbors for more details on the suspect’s description.
