Driver shoots self and crashes into Denver building overnight, damaging gas line

A driver shot themselves while driving and crashed a vehicle into a business near Virginia Avenue and Federal Boulevard in Denver overnight, according to police and firefighters.

Denver’s Fire Department wrote in a social media post shortly after midnight Friday that firefighters were responding to a “collapse” and broken gas line in the area. Xcel Energy had shut down the gas line by 12:19 a.m.

Department spokesperson Luis Cedillo wrote in an email that the driver was transported to a hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was being treated for his injuries Friday morning. He also said the crash damaged one of the building’s exterior walls.

Police did not immediately respond to a list of questions about the incident.
