A 19-year-old man who may have fallen asleep behind the wheel was arrested Sunday in a Highlands Ranch crash that killed a pedestrian and his dog, sheriff’s officials said.
Cade Kaminski was arrested Sunday on suspicion of vehicular homicide, animal cruelty, criminal negligence, reckless driving and weaving, according to a news release from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s officials said Kaminski may have fallen asleep behind the wheel, driven up onto a sidewalk and struck a pedestrian out walking his dog, according to the release.
The pedestrian, a 31-year-old man who has not been publicly identified, died at the scene of the crash, sheriff’s officials said. The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital where it later died from its injuries.
The Douglas County Coroner’s Office will identify the pedestrian at a later date.
Kaminski is scheduled to appear in Douglas County District Court on Thursday for a filing of charges hearing, according to court records. He’s being held on a $20,000 bond.
Douglas County deputies responded to the Highlands Ranch crash at the intersection of Kendrick Castillo Way and Mayberry Drive just before 3 p.m. Sunday, according to the release.
Kendrick Castillo Way was closed for more than five hours Sunday for the crash cleanup and investigation. It reopened just after 8 p.m., sheriff’s officials said.
