In 2026, the Miami Dolphins will have a new quarterback. It marks a shift after the Dolphins spent the previous six seasons investing in 2020 fifth-overall pick Tua Tagovailoa.
After Tagovailoa’s struggles in 2025, the Dolphins released the former first-round pick despite him having over $54 million guaranteed with the Dolphins in 2026, and the team took on $99 million in dead cap.
Additionally, the Dolphins also moved on from backup quarterback Zach Wilson, in whom Miami’s previous coaching staff and front office decided to invest $6 million as they viewed the former first-rounder as a potential reclamation project.
Now, Miami has decided to cut ties with yet another quarterback before the 2026 NFL season.
Miami Dolphins Release Quarterback
The Miami Dolphins announced on X: “Roster Moves | We have signed safety Tanner Wall and claimed cornerback Ahmari Harvey off waivers from Pittsburgh. We have also waived quarterback Mark Gronowski and waived/injured safety Omar Brown.”
Gronowski was an undrafted free-agent quarterback signing this offseason. At the time of his signing, Julian Dieni wrote for DolphinsTalk: “The Dolphins signed the winningest quarterback in college football history. Mark Gronowski made a name for himself at South Dakota State, a prestigious FCS football factory. He is a 2-time FCS champion and FCS Championship Game MVP. Unfortunately, his attempt to move up the college football ranks cost him, as he ended up in an Iowa offense without an established passing system.
Overall, he finished his collegiate career with 103 passing touchdowns and 53 rushing touchdowns. He has real talent and potential and was brought in for a late top-30 visit by Miami. He will compete for the backup spot with Quinn Ewers and his former FCS rival, Cam Miller.”
Despite his dual-threat ability, evidenced by his 53 rushing touchdowns, it appears Gronowski did not do enough during training camp to earn a roster spot.
Following the news of his release, The Miami Herald’s Isaiah Smalls wrote: “The move to get rid of Gronowski should come as no surprise to anyone who has attended Dolphins training camp. Despite his athleticism, he wasn’t that accurate and had a penchant for turnovers.”
Dolphins Quarterback Room
If the team does not add a quarterback during training camp, the room will feature Malik Willis, who signed a three-year, $67 million contract this offseason, Quinn Ewers, the quarterback who replaced Tagovailoa down the stretch of the 2025 season, and Cam Miller, a former sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, who the Dolphins claimed off the Raiders’ practice squad prior to the final week of the 2025 season.
Fortunately for the Dolphins, it appears Willis is growing into his role as Miami’s starter. Regarding his latest performance in training camp, the Miami Herald’s Omar Kelly wrote: “Progress is being made by Malik Willis, and more importantly, it’s being done — showcased — within the structure of the offense. Willis, whom the Miami Dolphins guaranteed $45 million to during the next two seasons, delivered his best practice of training camp’s first two weeks on Friday by consistently hitting his targets and delivering clutch throws on third down and in the red zone.”
