Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman Sends Blunt Message After Losing Series to Guardians

The Los Angeles Dodgers did the unthinkable: they lost a series at home.

But Freddie Freeman has a reasonable explanation for it.

The Dodgers’ superstar first baseman opened up about their offensive struggles after they dropped two out of three to the Cleveland Guardians, capped by a 4-1 loss to Gavin Williams on Wednesday.

LA is, of course, the two-time reigning World Series champs and has an embarrassment of offensive riches. Still, the Dodgers are 19th in the majors in runs scored (23) after six games after mustering just seven runs against the Guardians.

Freddie Freeman: The Dodgers ‘Haven’t Hit Yet’ in 2026

The Dodgers lineup features former MVPs in their Nos. 1-3 hitters, plus they added the prize of the offseason when they signed superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker to a four-year contract.

Yet, after averaging more than five runs per game last year, the Dodgers have only surpassed five runs in one of their first six games. Their .689 OPS is seventh in the NL, and 13th in the majors, and they have hit only seven home runs in six games.

“I think you could talk to every single one of us, and say you wish we’d had a better offensive first  week,” Freeman said. “It’s not what we wanted as an offense starting out, but … anytime anyone goes into that [batter’s] box, anything can happen.”

Luckily, the Dodgers have pitched well. They rank in the top-5 in the majors in ERA (2.83, T4th), opposing batting average (.190, 4th) and home runs against (4, T4th).

But two-time reigning NL MVP Shohei Ohtani is slashing .167/.423/.167. Mookie Betts has just three hits in 22 ABs (.136) and an .558 OPS, and Tucker’s OPS is worse (.457).

Yet, Freeman, who went 2 for 12 against Cleveland despite blasting his first home run of the season in the series finale, is confident the Dodgers will figure it out.

“We’ve got a really good lineup. We’re just not hitting yet,” Freeman said. “It’s a long season. It’s just the first week. We’ll be fine.”

Freddie Freeman Hopes Going on the Road Will Help the Dodgers Offense

There has been a level of pomp and circumstance surrounding the Dodgers this year, though it did not affect them during their three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Still, the Dodgers will go on the road to face the Washington Nationals in their home opener, as part of a six-game trip against the Nats and Toronto Blue Jays. Getting away from Southern California may galvanize the offense.

“I think our offense is inevitable,” Freeman said. “Hopefully [Thursday] with the off day, the coldness will go away and we’ll heat up Friday in the day game.”

Still, even if it doesn’t — the Dodgers may be in for a rude awakening, weather-wise, given the uneven early-spring East Coast weather — Freeman won’t freak out. At this point, he is more excited the Dodgers have banked wins even while their offense is struggling.

“Baseball is baseball,” Freeman said. “I know we’re looking for some answers here, but we’re still OK. We’re 4-2, and we have not played well as an offense. We’ll get going.”
