Dodgers’ 36-Year-Old Star Freddie Freeman Reveals Retirement Timeline

While he is still playing at an extremely high level, Freddie Freeman is still aware that he cannot play forever.

So the Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman unveiled his retirement timeline of playing until he completes his 20th major-league season while participating in Dodger Fest this weekend.

Freemasn finished third in the National League in batting (.295) for the second time in his past three seasons and has finished in the top-three in the NL in hitting in three of his four seasons with the Dodgers. He also, of course helped the Dodgers win the World Series for the second straight year.

Freeman is about to enter his 17th big-league season and his fifth with LA after signing a six-year, $162 million contract with the Dodgers after spending his first 12 years with the Atlanta Braves.

Freddie Freeman Wants To Play 20 Major League Seasons

Freeman is an elite hitter and defensive first baseman. He has been an All-Star seven years in a row and won the NL MVP as a member of the Braves in 2020 — and nearly helped them knock off the Dodgers in the bubble NLCS that year.

So even though he is getting long in the tooth, baseball wise, Freeman still has got it, and he wants to keep playing while he still can.

So when asked how much longer Freeman has the desire to play, he stated four more years.

“I have two years left on this deal,” Freeman said. “I think 20 years would be pretty cool, so I guess I would put it at four more years.”

Freeman has been an integral part of those World Series wins as well. He won the World Series MVP in 2024, when the Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in five games and he of course had a walk-off grand slam to win Game 1.

He then blasted a walk-off solo homer in the 18th inning of Game 3 of the 2025 Fall Classic, which boosted LA to a seven-game World Series win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

“I just love playing and performing and being on the biggest of stages,” Freeman said. “To be able to have the chance to win World Series, that’s what we play for. That’s why we grind every day throughout the whole season.

“When you get in those situations, something just happens, and I’m not going to try to figure it out. I’m just going to let it keep going. But I love that situation.”

Freddie Freeman’s Body Is Ready For Season 17

Though Freeman’s level of play could fall off due to age, it’s more likely an injury would force him into retirement — like the lingering ankle ailment that has plagued him the past two years.

But after he had his ankle surgically repaired, then having a “mishap” in the shower at the start of last year, Freeman says he is going into spring training this year at full strength, even showing his ankle’s ability to wiggle to the fans in attendance.

“It’s been a normal offseason for me. I feel great,” Freeman said. “Body feels good. I’m ready to get going.”
