Discarded rubbish blamed for Thanksgiving blaze in Edgewater

Two women who inhaled smoke were recovering Friday after a fire erupted inside an elevator shaft at an Edgewater apartment complex on the North Side.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 6:25 p.m. Thursday at the complex in the 6000 block of North Kenmore Avenue, Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Merritt said.

Two women suffered minor smoke inhalation and were taken to area hospitals in fair condition, Merritt said.

The fire may have started due to some discarded rubbish, possibly cigarette butts, according to Merritt.
