Dillon Gabriel Gets Potentially Concerning News After Browns Trade

The Cleveland Browns could make another roster move after their recent trade.

Cleveland traded Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Verse and three draft picks. Verse reported to OTAs and was wearing jersey number 8, which is Dillon Gabriel’s number, which could mean Gabriel is changing his number or could be off the roster soon.

Yet, Browns reporter John Sabol revealed that Gabriel is still wearing No. 8 as well, meaning the Browns technically have two players wearing the number.

Verse wore No. 8 for the Rams, so him keeping that number isn’t a surprise. Yet, the fact that Gabriel is still wearing that number could make for a decision soon, whether Verse has to pay Gabriel or the Browns make a roster decision.

Cleveland selected Gabriel in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, but he appears to be on the outside looking in, in terms of the quarterback battle.

Browns GM Claims Verse Was Key Reason for Trade

The Browns acquired Verse in the Garrett trade, who will help fill the void of the two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

After the trade was official, Browns general manager Andrew Berry had plenty of praise for Verse and said he was a key reason for the trade happening.

“Jared Verse, he’s obviously a huge part of this return for us,” Berry said. “Jared is an outstanding football player, former Defensive Rookie of the Year, two-time original ballot Pro Bowler. He’s a perfect DNA match for our attacking front.

“He’s really a terror in both phases as a run defender and a pass rusher. And we are really, really excited to add him to our team. He allows us to continue to play defense as a high level, which has been our standard over the past several seasons, and we’re really excited to welcome him into the organization.”

Verse is also from Dayton, Ohio, so Berry expects him to be a fan favorite for the fans.

“He’s ready to go. I think he’s really excited to play in the scheme,” Berry said. “He’s from Dayton, Ohio. His sister is still here and everything like that, but he’s going to be fun. He’s s a ton of energy.”

Verse is entering his third NFL season and was named to the Pro Bowl in his first two.

Gabriel On Outside Looking in

Although Gabriel started games last season for Cleveland, he’s now in a roster battle.

The quarterback battle is between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, while Taylen Green could be the third quarterback. Gabriel, meanwhile, hasn’t gotten many competitive reps at OTAs.

“Gabriel’s only three competitive reps Wednesday came in that seven-on-seven period, which underscores what we already knew: This is Watson vs. Sanders, with Monken ideally naming a winner by the start of training camp in late July but not promising any kind of firm timeline,” Jackson wrote.

Gabriel threw for 937 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions last season with the Browns. He appeared in 10 games, but started 6, going 1-5 in those starts.
