DIA parking shifts to “cashless experience”

Parking lot exit stations at Denver International Airport will accept only credit and debit cards for payment – part of an airport streamlining initiative.

Four new payment kiosks set up on Level Five inside the main terminal, however, will be available to accept cash, along with debit and credit cards.

Travelers who scan their parking entrance ticket and insert cash into one of the kiosks will be issued paper receipts that can be used to exit the parking lot in their vehicles.

The receipts give travelers parked in lots reached by shuttle bus 60 minutes to exit. Those parked in the east and west garages will have 30 minutes. Those in the east and west “economy” lots will be allotted 45 minutes.

This shift to “a cashless experience” in parking lot exit lanes,  to be completed by the end of January, “will improve traffic flow and create an even more efficient operation” across all of DIA’s lots, senior vice president Mark Nagel said in a statement announcing the change.

Travelers at DIA made about 60,000 cash payments per year. and officials said these accounted for about 1.1% of total parking transactions.
