Derek Carr Addresses Potential Return to Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders continue to undergo changes, as they are about to hire another new head coach. There is a lot of interest surrounding the job opening, and one person who has been watching it is former quarterback Derek Carr.

Though he’s technically retired, it doesn’t seem like he’s truly done with football. In a recent video posted on social media, Carr and his brother, David Carr, made some coaching predictions. One of them was David Carr predicting Derek Carr returning to the Raiders.

“I’m so down,” Derek Carr said in response.

Now, it’s not clear if he means he’s “down” to go back and play quarterback or if he’s “down” to go back and coach. Regardless, the Raiders could be in Carr’s future.

Though things didn’t end well with Carr and the franchise, he continues to speak highly of the Raiders. The team is likely to use the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on a quarterback, so if Carr comes out of retirement, it’s unlikely he’ll be playing for Las Vegas, unless he’s OK with being a backup. That said, coaching could be an interesting option.

Carr Wants to Coach

Carr has been doing a podcast with his brother, which has been very popular so far. A career in media could make sense for the former quarterback.

However, he has flirted with the idea of getting into coaching in the past. It’s something that he hopes to do eventually.

“I definitely want to coach. I’m definitely going to coach,” Carr told the Fresno Bee in an interview last year. “Right now, I’m coaching fourth through sixth grade and the scheme that I’m putting in is about 1% of my brain power, and I have the itch to want to share all of that, to put 11 people out there and scheme people up. I have a passion for that, and a passion honestly to raise the next generation, not just for who they are on the football field but who they can be off the field, too, in our communities and those kinds of things.”

Carr has played under a lot of coaches in his career, and he said that Jon Gruden thinks he has what it takes to be a coach.

“Coach Gruden always told me, ‘You’re going to be a great coach.’ He personally liked my leadership and the way I knew the game,” Carr said.

Could Klint Kubiak Bring on Carr if He Gets Raiders Job?

If Carr is going to get his first coaching job, the Raiders make perfect sense. He has a lot of equity with the franchise, and clearly, he wants to return. If the hope is to get into coaching soon, there’s one candidate the Raiders could hire who might consider bringing Carr on.

Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has interviewed for the Raiders job, and he’s among the favorites to get hired. He coached Carr last season when he was the offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints. Carr has also endorsed Kubiak for the Raiders job.

If he gets hired by Las Vegas, bringing Carr on as an assistant quarterbacks coach could be an exciting move. It’d be the perfect way to get him back in the building, while giving him a low-pressure job to get his start in coaching.
