Denver to open Coliseum as cold weather shelter this weekend

City officials will open the Denver Coliseum as a cold weather shelter this weekend and keep other shelters open as below-freezing temperatures continue in the metro.

While not as cold as earlier this week, Denver’s overnight temperatures are forecast to dip into the teens and 20s through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Denver’s cold weather shelters are activated when overnight temperatures fall to 25 degrees or colder and are open 24/7.

The Denver Coliseum at 4600 N. Humboldt St. will open as an overflow shelter starting at 3 p.m. Saturday and will remain open through 11 a.m. Thursday, city officials said in a news release.

People needing shelter can go to a “front door” access point, including:

  • Denver Rescue Mission Lawrence Street Community Center, 2222 Lawrence St., for individual men;
  • Samaritan House, 2301 Lawrence St., for individual women;
  • Urban Peak, 1630 S. Acoma St., for people 12 to 24 years old;
  • Families in need may call the Connection Center at 303-295-3366.

There are also 24/7 shelters at The Aspen shelter/former DoubleTree Hotel, 4040 Quebec St., and at city facilities at 2601 W. 7th Ave. and 375 S. Zuni St.
