Denver NWSL franchise launches fan vote for team’s nickname

The Denver NWSL franchise is taking its first major step since expansion toward creating an identity, and the fans are in charge.

The club announced on Wednesday that it is leaving the team’s nickname up to a fan vote, which supporters can access on the club’s website (DenverNWSL.com/Name). The ballot features six options: Denver Peak FC, Colorado 14ers FC, Colorado Summit FC, Denver Elevate FC, Denver FC and Denver Gold FC. Fans are also permitted to write in their own ideas.

“From day one, we’ve said that this club belongs to Colorado, and we’re putting that into action by letting our fans help shape its identity,” Denver NWSL owner Rob Cohen said in the club’s press release. “We’re building something special here — an elite women’s soccer club that represents the strength, spirit, and diversity of this community. This is the chance for fans to make their mark on history.”

Also according to the release, the shortlist was curated based on feedback received from the team’s launch event at Number 38 in January, social media and community outreach. Fans will have until next Wednesday to cast their votes.

In full Colorado sports fashion, the club seems to want its name to pay homage to the state’s history and rich geographic features that draw tourists from around the world.

Denver was announced as the league’s 16th franchise on Jan. 30 for a historic $110 million fee. The club received more than 2,000 season ticket deposits on that day alone and more than 5,000 by the end of that weekend, an NWSL expansion team record, all before the team even has a stadium to call home.

On that front, the club said, plans are being finalized and should be announced soon. The team will begin play in the 2026 season.
