Metro Denver communities are opening cold weather shelters and warming centers ahead of this weekend’s winter weather, which is forecast to drop up to 5 inches of snow on the city.
Here’s a roundup of where people can warm up during the day and hunker down overnight.
Denver
With “dangerous polar freeze temperatures approaching” in addition to the weekend snow, Denver’s severe weather shelters will be open through Jan. 31, city officials said.
People in need of shelter can visit the Stone Creek shelter at 4595 Quebec St., which used to be a Best Western hotel, and facilities at 2601 West 7th Ave. and 375 South Zuni St., according to Denver officials.
People are also encouraged to go to the city’s regular “front door” shelter access points, including:
- Denver Rescue Mission’s Lawrence Street Community Center at 2222 Lawrence St. for individual men, open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily;
- Samaritan House at 2301 Lawrence St. for individual women, open from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. daily;
- Urban Peak at 1630 South Acoma St. for 15- to 20-year-olds, open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily;
- The Salvation Army Connection Center for families with children, which people should call for intake information at 303-295-3366 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday.
Jefferson County
Jefferson County opens cold weather shelters and warming centers when temperatures drop below 20 degrees or 32 degrees when more than one inch of snow is expected, according to county officials.
Available shelters, open through Monday, include:
- Lakewood’s Severe Weather Shelter at 8000 West Colfax Ave., open between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. No registration is required.
- Mission Arvada of The Rising at 7500 West 57th Ave., open from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. Guests must register at the Mission between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- The MAC in Westminster at 3295 West 72nd Ave., open 24/7.
- EChO Shelter in Evergreen, open from 6:15 p.m. to 7 a.m. Guests must register ahead of time and complete a background check.
Daytime warming shelters open in Jefferson County include:
- Lakewood’s Navigation Center at 8000 W. Colfax Ave. The warming center will stay open 24/7 from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Tuesday.
- Jefferson County Public Libraries. Branches of the library will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Mission Arvada of The Rising Church at 7500 West 57th Ave.
Jefferson County also provides motel vouchers for families with children during severe and extreme weather, county officials said. Families can contact Jefferson County Human Services at 303-271-1388.
Arapahoe County
Arapahoe County’s HAAT Force offers motel vouchers for families with children, people with disabilities, people over the age of 65, pregnant people, people with pets or service animals, transgender people and people recently released from the hospital. Call its hotline, 720-483-7864, to learn more about preregistration for the vouchering system and about vouchering events.
Open shelters include:
- Comitis Crisis Center (Mile High Behavioral Healthcare) at 2178 Victor St. in Aurora. The 24/7 shelter is open to families, veterans and adults. Text “Warmup” to 313131 for updates or call 303-341-9160.
- Movement 5280 at 3190 South Grant St. in Englewood. Guests must call the hotline, 720-483-7864, after 2 p.m. to see if there is space available.
Warming centers are available at:
- Englewood Public Library at 1000 Englewood Parkway from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
- Bemis Public Library at 6014 South Datura St. in Littleton from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
- Movement 5280 at 3190 Grant St. in Englewood from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
- Giving Heart at 4358 South Broadway in Englewood from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
- The Well (Wellspring Church) at 3885 South Broadway in Englewood from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
