In an unexpected turn of events, Cupertino City Council candidate Hung Wei — who announced last week that she is suspending her reelection campaign to focus on her recovery from Stage 4 lung cancer — is jumping back into the November election race.
On Monday, the councilmember confirmed her campaign in an email to her supporters and in a brief Youtube video, in which Wei describes the reasoning for her return.
“I received so many emails and phone calls from supporters in Cupertino who would like me to continue to campaign to serve the city,” Wei said. “Since my name is still on the ballot, if elected I am committed to serving Cupertino for the next four years.”
Wei now rejoins incumbent Kitty Moore, former mayors Rod Sink, Gilbert Wong and Barry Chang, former Planning Commissioner Ray Wang and political newcomer Claudio Bono for a chance to fill two open council seats.
Wei was diagnosed with cancer in June and suspended her campaign to prioritize her health. It was a decision, she said, that was not taken lightly and weighed heavily on her heart. Wei intended to throw her full support behind fellow candidate Rod Sinks, who shares the councilmember’s passion for “addressing the pressing issues facing Cupertino families.” In her video, Wei said she will continue to support Sinks and advocate for pressing issues.
“I am truly grateful for the outpouring of love and support I’ve received,” Wei said. “I feel more determined than ever to fight for the issues that matter most to us — education, affordable housing and community safety. Together, I know we can make Cupertino an even better place to live and thrive.”
