KANSAS CITY — The Cubs are acquiring right-handed reliever Nate Pearson from the Blue Jays, a source confirmed Saturday.
Pearson, 27, might not have been a popular target among contenders, posting a 5.63 ERA this season. But the Cubs, last place in their division in an under-performing season, are positioned to put a greater emphasis on potential.
With a fastball that averages 98 mph, Pearson adds a power arm to the Cubs bullpen. And his .356 BAbip (batting average on balls in play) suggests that luck may have had a hand in his overall numbers.
This season, Pearson has posted a 28% strikeout rate, close to matching his career-high 2021 strikeout rate, and his walk rate (9.3%) has at least improved.
The 2017 first-round pick has spent his career with the Blue Jays, but injuries played a role in derailing the lofty hopes for the former starter. He amassed a 5.21 ERA over parts of four major-league seasons.
ESPN reported that the Cubs were sending two prospects, shortstop Josh Rivera (ranked No. 23 in the Cubs’ system, per MLB Pipeline) and outfielder Yohendrick Pinango (No.29) to the Blue Jays in the deal.
By adding bullpen depth with the trade, the Cubs could be setting themselves up for more moves, knowing high-leverage relievers are always in high demand for teams focused on a playoff push.
