As former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy fell out of favor with ownership, he still had the backing of one of his best players. Star linebacker Micah Parsons said on his podcast Tuesday he was crushed by McCarthy leaving.
McCarthy, an 18-year head coach who had a long run with the Packers, is one of the top candidates for the Bears and is expected to interview Wednesday.
“It is devastating,” Parsons said on his “The Edge” podcast. “Coach Mike is a great father, great coach — one of the winningest coaches. He’s always been good to us as a unit, coaches, players. Losing a great coach like Mike hurts.”
McCarthy also is expected to interview with the Saints this week.
He coached the Cowboys for five seasons and went 49-35 with a 1-3 record in the playoffs. He went 12-5 in 2021, ’22 and ’23 before slumping to 7-10 this season when quarterback Dak Prescott missed significant time with an injury.
McCarthy, 61, also coached the Packers from 2006 through ’18 and helped launch the career of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. McCarthy went 125-77-2 in 13 seasons with Green Bay and won a Super Bowl in the 2010 season.
