Cowboys Sign 2-Time Super Bowl Champion WR

The Dallas Cowboys have plenty of drama at wide receiver — now they’ve added more depth by signing veteran free agent wide receiver and 2-time Super Bowl champion Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a 1-year contract.

“Veteran WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling is signing a one-year deal with the Cowboys, per source,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero wrote on his official X account on Monday.

The 31-year-old Valdes-Scantling — better known as MVS — is 6-foot-4, 206 pounds, and won a pair of Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs following the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He spent time with 3 different teams in 2025 with the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 8 NFL seasons, Valdes-Scantling has 219 receptions for 3,686 yards and 21 touchdowns in 116 regular-season games. Where he’s been really special is in the playoffs, with 27 receptions for 432 yards and 4 touchdowns in 12 career postseason games.

MVS Could Face Uphill Battle to Make Roster

There’s a reason Valdes-Scantling has bounced around the NFL like a ping pong ball the last 3 seasons — and it’s not his elite size or 4.37-second speed in the 40-yard dash.

The Cowboys will be the 6th team he’s played for since 2023 after spending his first 6 seasons with just 2 teams — the Packers and Kansas City Chiefs, where he was a key figure on those 2 Super Bowl-winning teams.

While MVS was winning championships, he was also gaining a reputation for making huge mistakes in the most clutch moments — dropping passes, coughing up fumbles, and making mental mistakes that cost his team wins.

The Cowboys didn’t make any splashes in free agency or in the 2026 NFL draft on wide receiver — they selected Anthony Smith in the 7th round — it will still be an uphill battle for Valdes-Scantling to make the roster.

If Pickens does come back, the WR1A and WR1B options for the Cowboys are NFL All-Pro CeeDee Lamb and Pickens. Valdes-Scantling is very much playing to become the 5th wide receiver on the roster behind proven veterans Kavontae Turpin and Ryan Flournoy — a job he will almost certainly be battling Smith for.

In 2020, Valdes-Scantling had the best season of his NFL career with the Packers, with 33 receptions for 690 yards and 6 touchdowns while leading the NFL by averaging 20.9 yards per reception.

Through 8 NFL seasons, Valdes-Scantling has approximately $29.4 million in career earnings.

Cowboys Could Have WR Drama on Horizon

The Cowboys are in the midst of what could be a burgeoning contract mess with NFL All-Pro wide receiver George Pickens, who had not signed his franchise tag for 2026 as of Monday — a deal that would pay him approximately $28 million in 2026.

Whatever happens with Pickens — extension or trade — can’t happen until he signs his franchise tag.

Pickens had career highs of 93 receptions for 1,249 yards and 9 touchdowns in 2025 after the Pittsburgh Steelers traded him to the Cowboys for a 3rd round pick in May 2025.

“Cowboys WR George Pickens signing his franchise tag would mean he’s allowed to now be traded at anytime,” The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov wrote on his official X account. “Not saying it will happen. But it now could happen as early as tonight.”
