Miami Hurricanes defensive end Rueben Bain Jr. just may be the first edge-rusher drafted in the 2026 NFL draft.
He also may fall out of the top 10 thanks to a leaked story about a car wreck he was involved in back in March 2024 in which a person later died. Though Bain was cited for careless driving at the time of the wreck, the charges were dropped later on.
Bain reportedly rearended another driver and his car struck two barriers. He had three passengers — two Miami teammates and a woman named Destiny Betts, who ended up in a coma for three months and later died.
The 21-year-old DE wasn’t charged with anything in relation to the accident or Betts’ death, and her family even stated they “wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career.”
The story broke weeks before the draft, and some people think it was leaked intentionally to tank Bain’s draft stock. And noted sports media personality Skip Bayless is pointing the finger at Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Of all the Cowboys’ critics, Bayless is arguably the harshest.
Bayless is always quick to rip into the Cowboys for the smallest mistake, and now he’s proposing a theory about Jones possibly being responsible for leaking the story about Bain and the wreck he was involved in in hopes he would fall to Dallas at pick 12.
“Dallas picks 12th, and if I know Jerry Jones — I wouldn’t put it past Jerry to leak something like this because he knew the background,” Bayless said. “I’m not saying he did, but this is the Jerry I know because I was around him a lot in Dallas, and this happens all the time that a team will leak something like this when they’ve don’t their homework and research, and they’re totally cool with it.
“It was just an accident. He rearended the guy, he just didn’t stop fast enough, and it was a tragedy, but it was a tragic accident. Jerry has had a long list of off-the-field hell-raisers. His all-time favorite player is Michael Irvin, who frankly made Aqib (Talib) look like a choir boy. … And so, Jerry is used to that kind of behavior.
“Even Ezekiel Elliot had off-the-field stuff at Ohio State, and Jerry took him fourth overall. Would Jerry take Rueben Bain now? Again, I don’t know the exact background that they’re checking into as we speak, but yeah, he probably would. He’d probably love it if Rueben Bain fell to 12.”
Cowboys Have History With Players and Red Flags

If anyone is familiar with the Cowboys and their past with players and red flags, it’s Bayless.
He pointed out that Jones isn’t afraid to gamble on players who have some questionable off-field baggage, pointing to the team drafting running back Ezekiel Elliott fourth overall in 2016 despite his admission to using drugs in college, and the team signing LSU offensive tackle La’el Collins as an undrafted free agent in 2015.
“La’el Collins, he was an All-American tackle at LSU,” Bayless continued. “And just before the draft it is leaked and broken that because a woman he had had a past relationship with, who was pregnant at the time, had been murdered…and the Louisiana police simply wanted to question him about the matter.
“And he was completely absolved later, but this came right before the draft. They were going to talk to him, not even as a person of interest, just to do background check on and see if he had any information, and he would’ve gone top 10, and he goes undrafted and Jerry is like, ‘Thank you very much,’ and they sign him as an undrafted free agent. He was pretty good.”
