Cowboys’ George Pickens Situation Gets Major Adam Schefter Update

The Dallas Cowboys and star wide receiver George Pickens entered the 2026 NFL offseason needing to figure out a long-term future.

Pickens had a breakout season in 2025 after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played like a true No. 1 wide receiver, which elevated his price tag for Jerry Jones and company heading into free agency.

Instead of locking him up to a long-term deal, the Cowboys opted to place the non-exclusive franchise tag on him. Other teams are still allowed to talk with Pickens, but he also hasn’t signed his tender. The future remains unclear between Dallas and Pickens.

At this point in time, the Cowboys seem to have no interest in a long-term extension. Could that lead to Pickens being traded prior to the 2026 season?

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter has revealed a new update on the situation.

Adam Schefter Offers Major Update on Cowboys, George Pickens

During a Monday appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show,” Schefter shared his belief that a trade could still be on the table for Pickens. He doesn’t senes that Dallas plans to offer a long-term deal to the wideout.

“George Pickens is as good as anybody and he played very well for Dallas,” Schefter said. “There’s gotta be a team that’s willing to step up and pay him to make this trade.”

Truthfully, Jones and the Cowboys are likely making the right decision. They already have star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb being paid big money. Paying two wide receivers No. 1 money just wouldn’t be a great financial decision.

Should Dallas openly place Pickens on the trade block, there are quite a few teams who could come calling. He is just 25 years old and now has shown true No. 1 potential.

Depending on what the Cowboys demanded in return for Pickens, it shouldn’t be too difficult to come up with a trade that would bring in value for him.

Which NFL Teams Could Trade for George Pickens?

Assuming a trade is still on the table, there are a handful of teams around the NFL who could make sense as potential destinations.

Among those teams are the Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, Washington Commanders, and potentially the Indianapolis Colts as well. Those are not the only teams who could make a play, but they are five to watch.

Last season with Dallas, Pickens ended up playing in all 17 regular season games. He racked up 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, all of which were career-high numbers.

Only time will tell what the Cowboys choose to do with the star wideout. However, all signs are pointing to a trade still being an option. This storyline doesn’t seem likely to go away anytime soon.
