Entering the 2026 NFL offseason, the Dallas Cowboys and team owner Jerry Jones were expected to be very aggressive. Many felt that they would land a blockbuster move or two to force their way back into Super Bowl contention.
To this point, the Cowboys have not made that kind of move. Jones and the front office have made some moves around the edges, but they haven’t added any star-caliber players.
Among the top moves of the offseason for Dallas so far are the additions of pass rusher Rashan Gary via a trade with the Green Bay Packers and the free agency signings of safety Jalen Thompson and cornerback Cobie Durant. The Cowboys also placed the franchise tag on star wide receiver George Pickens.
Fans are still hoping to see Dallas make a blockbuster move. However, the team is running out of time and the market is beginning to dry up.
With that being said, the Cowboys are facing some new criticism over an offseason move that they didn’t make.
Dallas Cowboys Facing New Backlash Amid NFL Offseason
Sports Illustrated’s Michael Fabiano made an appearance on “The MMQB” and made his displeasure clear about Dallas not adding either Maxx Crosby or Trey Hendrickson to bolster the pass rush.
“As a lifelong Cowboys fan who will question every move Jerry Jones makes (or in this case doesn’t make), I’m left questioning his decision not to add Maxx Crosby or Trey Hendrickson. Who knows, maybe the former might still happen with Rashan Gary taking a pay cut after being traded from the Packers,” Fabiano wrote.
At the beginning of the offseason, the Cowboys were viewed as a potential front-runner for both players. While Maxx Crosby remains a potential option after the Baltimore Ravens backed out of trading for him, he seems likely to remain with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Fabiano continued forward, unloading more criticism onto Jones and the Cowboys.
“But Jones had two impact players available who could cause chaos for opposing offensive lines, yet he chose Gary. I know the draft is still ahead, but by whiffing on this duo and trading Osa Odighizuwa to the 49ers, Dallas’s defense might be even worse in 2026.”
The Cowboys Are Facing an Uphill Road to Super Bowl Contention
Without making a big high-impact move this offseason, Dallas will struggle to make the leap to being an elite contender in the ever-improving NFC.
There is still time for the Cowboys to remedy their misses this offseason. Jones could still pull off a major trade or try to add some of the better free agents on the market. The 2026 NFL Draft will also offer Dallas a chance to improve with two first-round picks.
Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that the expectations were set too high for the Cowboys to begin the offseason.
It will be interesting to see what Dallas chooses to do throughout the rest of the offseason. Should the Cowboys not make any more moves outside of the draft, fan frustration levels will undoubtedly continue growing.
