Cop shoots at vehicle fleeing traffic stop on Near North Side

A person of interest was in custody after a Chicago police officer shot at a fleeing vehicle which crashed into a squad car during a traffic stop Sunday evening near Old Town on the Near North Side.

No one was shot and police have not announced charges.

It began around around 6:50 p.m. when officers assigned to the 18th District tried to make a traffic stop in connection to a person with a gun call in the 300 block of West Division Street, Chicago police said.

During the stop, occupants of the vehicle refused officers’ commands and drove off after crashing into a police vehicle, police said. One officer fired their weapon in the direction of the fleeing vehicle, officials said.

The vehicle was later recovered several blocks north in the 100 block of West North Avenue and a person of interest was taken into custody, police said.

An officer was taken to an area hospital for observation, but no injuries were reported.

The shooting is being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.

The officer or officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days, police said.
