Cook County sheriff’s deputy shot, killed on vacation in Turks and Caicos

A Cook County Sheriff’s deputy was killed by stray gunfire while on vacation in Turks and Caicos on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office and local officials.

Shamone Duncan, a 20-year veteran of the county’s Department of Corrections, and a man who lived in Turks and Caicos were killed by stray gunfire at a bar in the town of Providenciales at 10 p.m. Saturday, according to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force. A 29-year-old man was wounded.

“There is no evidence to suggest that Ms. Duncan, Mr. [Dario] Stubbs or the wounded victim were the targets of this incident,” the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force said in a statement. “We condemn this violence and will remain resolute in our pursuit of the person(s) responsible for this despicable act.”

Duncan, 50, had been assigned to Cermak Health Services at Cook County Jail, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.

“Our hearts are broken for the family of Deputy Shamone Duncan,” a sheriff’s spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday. “We are in contact with her family to provide any support they need during this difficult time and are supporting her colleagues as they process this terrible news.”
