Concord police fire at least one shot at driver who fled traffic stop

CONCORD — A Concord police officer fired his gun while trying to run down a person who ran away from a traffic stop Thursday night, police said.

Nobody was hit by the gunfire, and police in a statement posted on social media that they arrested the person. Police said the 37-year-old suspect was in possession of gun.

The interaction unfolded about 10:10 p.m., when the officer tried to stop a driver in the area of Clayton Road and Ellis Street. According to police, the driver got out of the car and tried to run away. They did not give a specific reason for why the officer fired.

“During the foot chase of the driver, an officer involved shooting occurred,” police said in their statement.

The driver got away from the officer initially, and police said the driver hid in the area of Sutter Street and Clayton Road. Police said they used a police dog and had assistance from a Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office helicopter to find the person and make the arrest.

Police did not identify the officer who fired the gun. They said the person they arrested is a Richmond resident.

It’s the second time this year that a Concord police officer has fired his gun. An officer fatally shot a man on Feb. 18, after they confronted him stabbing a family member.
