Community college district taking applications for Sunnyvale trustee seat

Trustee sought

The board of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District voted unanimously Dec. 2 to make a provisional appointment to fill the Trustee Area 2 seat vacated by Patrick Ahrens.

Ahrens was elected to the state Assembly in November to represent District 26, which includes Cupertino, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and parts of north and west San Jose. He resigned as representative of the district board’s Trustee Area 2, which covers central Sunnyvale, effective Dec. 1.

The district is required by state law to either order an election or make a provisional appointment to fill the seat. The provisional trustee will serve the remainder of Ahrens’ term, which ends in December 2026.

Applicants must be California citizens over age 18 who are registered to vote and reside in Trustee Area 2. To apply, submit a letter of interest and resume to the chancellor’s office at chancellor@fhda.edu by Jan. 3, 2025. It is anticipated that the governing board will conduct applicant interviews from Jan. 13-21 and vote on the appointment prior to Jan. 30.non

Food recovery help

Sunnyvale Community Services is among the recipients of grants aimed at expanding food recovery capacity, with a focus on food safety and ensuring proper handling recovered food.

The Food Recovery Initiative of Joint Venture Silicon Valley distributed $108,000 in Capacity Expansion Grants this year to 12 local nonprofits. The grants, which ranged from $2,427 to $15,231, enabled the purchase of equipment that will increase the volume of surplus food recovered and distributed throughout Santa Clara County, with special emphasis on expanding the recovery of prepared foods.

The initiative came at a critical time, as a new state law mandates that certain businesses and institutions donate surplus food rather than discard it.
