Commanders QB Jayden Daniels out of practice Wednesday due to rib injury ahead of Bears game

It’ll take until at least Friday to get clarity on Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels‘ status for Sunday against the Bears, but the team held him out of practice Wednesday.

Daniels left the Commanders’ win over the Panthers last week because of a rib injury and was replaced by veteran Marcus Mariota. He would start against the Bears if Daniels remains out.

“We want to make sure he can fully express himself and do all the things that he does,” coach Dan Quinn said of Daniels, who will be in meetings and get treatment.

Daniels’ potential absence would dampen enthusiasm for the Bears-Commanders matchup, which was flexed to the late-afternoon slot in large part because it featured a showdown between Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and Daniels.

Not only are Williams and Daniels the last two Heisman Trophy winners, but Williams went No. 1 in the draft and Daniels went No. 2.

Latest on the Bears
Previous matchups of rookie quarterbacks taken 1-2 in the draft have featured more Jameis Winstons than Peyton Mannings — and never a team with a winning record. The Commanders with Jayden Daniels and the Bears with Caleb Williams already are on a different path.
The mixed messages on Daniels’ rib injury should clear up Wednesday, when both teams begin practice for the week.
The Bears quarterback has been improving at a dramatic, and encouraging, rate.
