Colts $1.2 Million Weapon Signs with Divisional Rival

While the Indianapolis Colts‘ offense will look almost entirely the same as the 2025 season, the team is losing some weapons. Indy brought back Daniel Jones on a two-year deal and Alec Pierce on a four-year deal to help lead the offense the next few years.

The surrounding pieces on the Colts, though, are starting to leave for better opportunities after an offseason that addressed many issues on the team.

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, running back Ameer Abdullah is signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars after one season with the Colts.

Abdullah, who originally signed to the Colts’ practice squad before the start of the season, was mainly used on special teams in the 2025 season. The running back was a kick returner, returning for 563 yards on 19 attempts, with a long of 81 yards.

The former Nebraska Cornhusker didn’t get much playing time on offense, rushing for 60 yards and a touchdown on 14 attempts, and had 99 receiving yards.

Signing with a divisional rival, Ameer Abdullah will have another opportunity to cement himself on an NFL roster.

Colts OC on Running Back Room

Ameer Abduallah’s departure comes after the Indianapolis Colts drafted a running back in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Indy selected Seth McGowan from the University of Kentucky with the 237th overall pick in this year’s draft.

“It’s a position where there are different types of guys with different strengths and you try to complement the guys that you have sometimes as you’re building a running back room,” Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said. “You like to have some guys that do different things well.”

“We’ve got some guys that have played some good college football, in different areas in different ways. Shoot. Whether they’re smaller or bigger, there’s something we saw in those guys that we liked.”

Adding McGowan gives the Colts some youth at the position, as Ameer Abdullah will turn 33 years old by the start of the next season.

Seth McGown ran for 725 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in the 2025 season with Kentucky and appears poised to be a rotational piece for Indianapolis.

Star Running Back Entering Final Year of Contract

Indy locked down the quarterback-wide receiver duo for the future, but as of now, one of the most decorated and longest-tenured players on the Colts’ roster could leave in the next free-agent period.

Running back Jonathan Taylor, a first-team All-Pro, three-time Pro Bowler and one of the best players at his respective position, is entering the final year of his three-year, $42 million deal.

As of now, the Colts and Taylor have yet to start negotiations to keep the player beyond the 2026 season. If Indy were to lose Taylor, it would be a big blow to the Colts offense and would force the team to address the run game.

The Athletic ranks Jonathan Taylor as the second-best free agent in the 2027 offseason.
