Colorado weather: Snow continues in mountains, freezing temps in Denver

Colorado’s mountains are forecast to see another few inches to more than a foot of fresh snow on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Northern Colorado’s Park Range of the Rocky Mountains will see the most snow, NWS forecasters said. In general, the range is forecast to see between 6 and 18 inches of snowfall on Tuesday, but the highest peak — Mount Zirkel — could see up to 21 inches.

Buffalo Pass, a mountain pass that goes through the Park Range, will also see up to 21 inches of snowfall, NWS forecasters said.

Other Tuesday morning snow forecasts include:

  • Up to 12 inches on U.S. 40’s Rabbit Ears Pass
  • Up to 5 inches in Rocky Mountain National Park, including at Bear Lake and along Trail Ridge Road
  • Up to 4 inches of snow at the Eisenhower and Johnson Tunnels and along U.S. 6’s Loveland Pass
  • Up to 3 inches on Keystone Mountain, Vail Pass and Breckenridge
  • Little to no snow in metro Denver

Though the snow has mostly wrapped up in the Denver area, with only a dusting possible between Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening, freezing temperatures will continue in the city, forecasters said.

Denver’s temperatures will peak around 13 degrees Tuesday, though it could feel as cold as 8 degrees below zero with windchill, before falling to minus 1 overnight, NWS forecasters said.

Temperatures fell below freezing at about 5 p.m. on Sunday and are expected to stay there until around 11 a.m. Friday, forecasters said. That means Denver is on track to see nearly 115 hours of consecutive, below-freezing temperatures.

The Eastern Plains, especially in the northern corner of Colorado, are forecast to see similar, below-freezing temperatures through Friday as well, according to NWS forecasters.

Temperature highs will be in the single digits across the plains on Tuesday and fall close to 15 degrees below zero overnight. Forecasters said it will feel as cold as minus 30 degrees with windchill.
