Severe thunderstorms set to roll into northeastern Colorado Thursday afternoon threaten large hail about the size of golf balls and up to 70 mph wind gusts, according to the National Weather Service.
While the Denver area has a small chance of Thursday afternoon storms, the largest threat of severe weather lies in the northeastern corner of the state — east of Fort Morgan and Limon, NWS forecasters said. Sterling and Akron have a risk of severe thunderstorms, and Julesburg has an enhanced risk.
Thunderstorms in the Eastern Plains and rain showers across the Front Range are expected to start around 2 p.m., forecasters said.
Heavy rainfall will be the main threat for the metro area, but a brief severe storm with quarter-size hail and 60 mph wind isn`t out of the question, NWS forecasters said in a hazardous weather alert.
Severe weather will continue Friday, especially from Weld County eastward toward the Kansas line, the hazardous weather alert stated.
Denver will see a high near 92 degrees Thursday and a light breeze in the afternoon, forecasters said. Overnight, temperatures will dip down to 65 degrees before heating back up into the 90s on Friday.
Out east, the plains will see Thursday temperature highs around 94 degrees, NWS forecasters said. Cloudy overnight weather and afternoon storms will bring 63-degree weather overnight before temperatures jump back up to the 90s Friday.

Saturday remains the only day on the forecast with a high below 90 degrees for both the Front Range and Eastern Plains.
NWS meteorologists said Denver will see temperature highs around 84 degrees and the plains will see highs around 82 degrees Saturday before the 90-degree heat returns Sunday for the foreseeable future.
