Colorado weather: Rain, snow and a hard freeze

Rain and snow falling across Colorado on Wednesday will make way for dry, freezing overnight temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

“Frost and freeze conditions are expected to kill unprotected sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” NWS forecasters said in a Freeze Warning. “Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold and drain irrigation systems.”

Forecasters said temperatures across the Front Range, Urban Corridor and adjacent plains are expected to drop as low as 22 degrees overnight.

Temperatures in Denver will peak around 39 degrees Wednesday before falling to 24 degrees overnight, forecasters said.

NWS forecasters said the metro-area Freeze Warning includes Denver, Fort Collins, Boulder, the western suburbs of Denver, Castle Rock, Greeley and Byers. The alert will be in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 9 a.m. Thursday.

As of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, multiple Colorado mountains had already seen 18 inches of fresh snow from Tuesday’s storm system, according to NWS meteorologists. Lower-elevation mountain peaks and the foothills also saw between 4 and 12 inches of snow.

Another 4 to 6 inches of snow could fall in Colorado’s mountains on Wednesday as the storm moves out, according to NWS forecasters.

Thursday into the weekend is expected to be warmer and drier, but snow and rain will return Sunday night, forecasters said.
