Bundle up, Colorado — the coldest temperatures of this week’s winter weather are still to come.
Temperatures in Denver will peak around 11 degrees Wednesday, though it could feel as cold as 12 degrees below zero with windchill, as light snow continues to fall, according to the National Weather Service.
Overnight into Thursday, metro Denver temperatures will hit minus 4 degrees and feel as cold as minus 15 degrees with windchill, NWS forecasters said.
The Front Range Foothills, Eastern Plains and parts of northern Colorado are forecast to see even colder windchill temperatures between minus 15 and minus 25, according to a NWS Cold Weather Advisory.
“The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in less than 30 minutes,” NWS forecasters said in the advisory, which covers most of central and eastern Colorado. The advisory will be active from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday.
People who venture outside when temperatures and windchills fall below zero should dress in several layers of loose-fitting clothing, cover their extremities and keep pets inside, forecasters said.
NWS forecasters said the coldest spots in Colorado overnight Wednesday will be in northern Colorado.
Walden is forecast to see overnight lows near minus 13 degrees and windchill temperatures near 36 degrees below zero. Steamboat Springs will see temperatures bottom out around 15 degrees below zero and windchill will make it feel like minus 30 degrees.
Warmer temperatures will return to lower elevations Friday, which could turn forecasted snow into rain, forecasters said.
