Colorado Rockies Place Former All-Star on the 15-Day IL

The Colorado Rockies placed former all-star José Quintana on the 15-day injured list on April 2, retroactive to March 30. He has a right hamstring strain.

Quintana started the season last Sunday pitching against the Miami Marlins, a no decision performance where he pitched 4.1 innings. He allowed four hits, four walks, and two earned runs while forcing two strike outs.

Jose Quintana Came to the Colorado Rockies

Quintana signed a one year, $6 Million contract with the Rockies this offseason. He played the 2025 season with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers finished last season with the most wins in baseball at 97 while the Rockies finished with the least at 43.

The Rockies ranked last season 30th in ERA, allowing a 5.99 ERA as a team. Coors Field is regularly the hardest ballpark to pitch at in the MLB.

Quintana earned a 3.96 ERA last year over 24 starts with the Brewers. He has a career ERA of 3.76. His best season was in 2016, where he made the All Star Game while with the Chicago White Sox.

New president of baseball operations, Paul DePodesta, stated this offseason that the organization wanted to look at pitchers with a solid mix of pitches. He said, “We want big arsenals. We think big arsenals will be harder to game-plan against. You know, if a guy has six, seven pitches, that’s harder to game-plan for than if a guy has two or three, right? So we think that’s an advantage.”

Quintana is a pitcher who mixes five different pitches: sinker, changeup, curveball, four-seam fastball, and slurve. He fits the mold of player the Rockies are looking to build their rotation around. At 37 years old, he is also the oldest player in the organization as well.

The Rockies made similar additions when they signed Michael Lorenzen and Tomoyuki Sugano. Lorenzen has seven pitches while Sugano has six pitches.

Colorado Rockies Make Corresponding Moves

In a corresponding move, the Rockies have called up 26 year old pitcher Valente Bellozo. The Rockies signed Bellozo to a minor league deal this offseason.

Bellozo has a 4.20 career ERA in 45 appearances and 19 starts in two seasons with the Miami Marlins. It is unknown if he will be called upon to take Quintana’s spot in the rotation.

The Rockies also sent down Ryan Ritter to the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes.

Ritter has batted .237/.290/.330 in 214 career plate appearances all for the Rockies. He plays second base and shortstop but is also utilized as a pinch runner in late game situations.

His spot on the roster has not been accounted for yet. However, it is expected that the Rockies will activate Mickey Moniak from the 10-day injured list tomorrow. Moniak remained with the Rockies after a successful 2025 season with the team, signing a one year $4 million contract.

Moniak was the first overall pick of the 2016 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies traded him to the Los Angeles Angels for Noah Syndergaard. He has a career batting line of .243/.283/.441 with 56 home runs over 410 games. In 2025, he batted .270/.306/.518 with 24 home runs across 135 games.
