Colorado public defender arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a child

An attorney with the Office of the Colorado State Public Defender has turned himself in after police say he sexually assaulted at least one child.

Colorado Springs police began investigating Thomas Cushing, 26, in November after they were altered to a possible sexual assault of a 14-year-old, the police department said in a news release.

Detectives applied for and were granted an arrest warrant Nov. 22. Cushing turned himself in and was booked into the El Paso County Jail on Nov. 23.

Cushing has been charged with sexual assault of a child involving a pattern of abuse, a felony, with court records indicating the abuse began in July.

Police believe Cushing may have targeted other children and encourage members of the public with information about his alleged crimes to contact the police department at 719-444-7000 or make a report anonymously at 719-634-7687 or 1-800-222-8477.
