With the end of the 2025-26 regular season around the corner, speculation around the impending free agency of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is quickly gaining steam. Among the chatter, a surprising suitor has emerged: the Lakers’ crosstown rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin and Tim Bontempts, if Kawhi Leonard’s contract is voided following the NBA’s ongoing investigation, James could view the Clippers as a viable option. That scenario, once unthinkable, could reshape the balance of power in Los Angeles overnight.
James, 41, has remained non-committal about his future as his current deal with the Lakers nears its end. Teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors have been floated. However, this Clippers pathway introduces a new layer of intrigue. It is driven less by speculation and more by circumstance. If financial flexibility opens up, the Clippers could position themselves to offer more than the Lakers.
Kawhi Leonard Investigation Could Shift the Market
The entire premise hinges on the league’s investigation into Kawhi Leonard’s endorsement deal with Aspiration. The NBA is examining whether payments tied to the deal, reportedly including stock and “no-show” compensation, violated salary cap rules. Commissioner Adam Silver has already labeled cap circumvention a “cardinal sin,” signaling the seriousness of the situation.
If the league ultimately voids Leonard’s contract, the Clippers would gain significant cap flexibility. That financial reset brings James into the conversation. League personnel, per ESPN, have already speculated that such a move could allow the Clippers to outbid the Lakers for his services.
Timing is everything here. Leonard, now 34, is in the midst of one of the most productive seasons of his career. Through 59 games, he is averaging 28.2 points (career-high), 6.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 50.3 percent from the field, 38.4 percent from three-point range and 89.9 percent from the free throw line in 32 minutes per game.
However, uncertainty around his contract introduces volatility. This isn’t a traditional free agency pitch. It’s an unexpected opportunity created by league intervention.
Familiar Ties and a Ready-Made Core for James
Even with financial flexibility, selling James on the Clippers requires more than cap space. Familiarity and roster construction both matter. Head coach Tyronn Lue remains one of James’ strongest connections in the league. The two won a championship together in Cleveland in 2016, and their relationship remains strong. James even advocated for Lue during the Lakers’ coaching search in 2019, reinforcing that trust.
Then there’s the roster. A young core featuring Darius Garland and Bennedict Mathurin provides scoring support and long-term upside. Garland’s playmaking and Mathurin’s versatility would ease James’ workload while keeping the Clippers competitive in a loaded Western Conference.
Just as important, the move wouldn’t force James to uproot his life. He would keep the same off-court advantages in Los Angeles while stepping into a flexible competitive situation.
James has also done a great job of fighting off Father Time even after 22 seasons. This season he is averaging 20.9 points, six rebounds and seven assists while shooting 51.4 percent from the field while navigating his new role as the third option behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
Still, one reality lingers: James has said playing for the Clippers would feel like a “road game.” That sentiment highlights how unconventional this scenario remains. But if the Leonard situation unfolds as some expect, unconventional could quickly become realistic.
