Child seriously injured in car crash after pursuit by Denver police

A child was seriously injured in a car crash after a police pursuit, according to the Denver Police Department.

Around 4 a.m. Sunday, paramedics were flagged down by a driver standing outside his vehicle near East 45th Avenue and North Peoria Street, according to a news release from the police department. When the paramedics stopped, the man drove away.

The paramedics noticed possible gunshot damage to the driver’s side window of the car and contacted Denver police, according to the release. Officers pursued the car to Pecos Street and Interstate 76 in Adams County before performing an immobilization maneuver, causing the vehicle to crash.

The driver fled on foot and the six passengers were taken to the hospital. A child, who was unrestrained, had serious injuries from the crash. A woman had an arm injury sustained during an alleged assault that occurred before the pursuit near East 17th Avenue and Alton Street in Aurora. The four other passengers were not seriously injured, according to police.

The driver of the car reported that someone from the earlier assault had allegedly fired a gun at his vehicle, according to the release. The Denver and Aurora police departments are investigating the alleged assault.
