Chiefs Receive Same 1st-Round Picks From 3 Top Mock Draft Experts

The Kansas City Chiefs are starting to see some consistency in their mock drafts.

Of course, only a few within the Chiefs’ organization actually know who their top targets are. The closer we get to the 2026 NFL Draft, the more smokescreens there are to throw people off.

However, three of the top draft experts in the industry are on the same page when it comes to how Kansas City will use its first-round picks, which come in at No. 9 and 29. They each have the Chiefs addressing two of their biggest roster needs with prospects that have often been connected to the team.

Kansas City Chiefs Select WR Jordyn Tyson at No. 9, CB Colton Hood at No. 29 in Mock Drafts From Mel Kiper Jr., Todd Mcshay, Peter Schrager

The Chiefs selecting Tyson has picked up a lot of steam lately. Talent-wise, many consider him the top wide receiver in this year’s draft class. The only thing holding him back is his lengthy injury history. Schrager, who has close ties with the Chiefs, had them taking Tyson and Hood in the mock draft he released last week, which we already covered here.

Here is what Kiper and McShay had to say about Kansas City taking Tyson ninth overall.

From Kiper: “We can’t ignore Tyson’s durability concerns, considering he missed a third of his possible college games because of injuries, but we also can’t ignore his fantastic skill set when he is on the field. He makes tough catches in traffic and had 711 yards last season. I’m already picturing Mahomes buying time in the pocket and firing 50-50 balls to Tyson in the end zone.”

From McShay: “I’ve been getting a lot of questions from teams about Tyson and where he might land, which is typically my biggest indicator that a player’s going earlier than expected. The long-term questions about his knee aren’t as big a concern in Kansas City as they might be elsewhere, as the Chiefs are looking to win now with Patrick Mahomes still in his prime. A healthy Tyson is arguably the best wide receiver in the class. He’s a 6-foot-2-plus target who consistently separates and is a reliable option (1.6 percent drop rate last season), traits that Mahomes desperately needs at the position.”

Here is Kiper and McShay’s analysis on the Chiefs selecting Hood at No. 29.

From Kiper: “Hood is long and physical, and he had 17 pass breakups over the past two seasons. Kansas City could still add to the position beyond Hood with one or two of its seven remaining picks outside Round 1.”

From McShay: “If Hood—who would be a clean man-to-man fit in Steve Spagnuolo’s system—falls into this range, the pick may be too good a value to pass up. Hood brings a physical, aggressive play style with the ability to turn and run vertically (verified 4.44-second 40 speed). He’s still developing his instincts when the ball is in the air, but the traits, competitiveness, and confidence are all there for him to grow into a high-level starter.”

What Are Chiefs’ Most Important Positions to Address During Draft?

GettyChiefs GM Brett Veach.

Wide receiver and cornerback are certainly worthy positions for Kansas City to take in the first round. If it does so, the most glaring remaining need will be at edge rusher. The Chiefs need a player who has significant upside to pair opposite of defensive end George Karlaftis, and take some pressure off of star defensive tackle Chris Jones.

There is also a need at right tackle. As of now, the Chiefs have veteran Jaylon Moore and second-year man Esa Pole to battle it out for the starting job. There is an element of unknown with both players, so K.C. could look to address the position early in the draft, especially with Mahomes coming off a torn ACL.
