Chiefs coach Andy Reid will return next year

NEW ORLEANS — The morning after owner Clark Hunt said he believed Andy Reid would continue coaching beyond Sunday’s Super Bowl, the Chiefs’ legendary head coach confirmed as much.

“Yes I’ll be back,” Reid said Tuesday. “I’m glad he’s going to have me back.”

Reid has 301 career wins, which ranks fourth in NFL history for regular season and playoff games combined. Another three or four strong seasons could push him past Don Shula, who has 347. Bears founder George Halas ranks third, with 324, while former Patriots coach Bill Belichick has 333.

Reid didn’t sound concerned about any such list when describing why he wanted to return.

“I enjoy being around the guys,” he said. “I enjoy the football games. You can’t put in the hours that we do and not enjoy it. I really love the game.”

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy called Reid “one of the greatest to ever do it,” saying that knows how to acquire winners, whether they be players or assistant coaches.

“You gotta have that …” the former Bears head coach said. “But you have to have the guy at the top that knows how to run it all. That’s what Coach Reid does.”

Notes

• Donald Trump will become the first sitting President to attend the Super Bowl on Sunday. The U.S. Secret Service said in a statement Tuesday that it has had staff in New Orleans preparing for his arrival.

• The NFL is stenciling the phrase “Choose Love” in the back of one end zone Sunday and “It Takes All of Us” in the other. A league spokesperson said in a statement that the NFL picked “Choose Love” over other phrases — a list that includes “End Racism”— as a response to wildfires, plane crash and terrorist attacks across the country in recent weeks.

• Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts praised Michael Jordan and his Jordan Brand, calling his affiliation with the company a blessing. He said he grew up a LeBron James fan and traced James’ competitive fire to Jordan through Kobe Bryant.

“The precedent [Jordan] set for sports culture and competitive sports. … to be part of that, to be able to carry that torch and to pave my own lane for those that are watching now, it’s special,” he said.
