Charged with killing his 78-year-old mom, Bay Area man pleads not guilty

A man who allegedly killed his mother last month in Rio Vista pleaded not guilty Monday morning in Solano County Superior Court.

Jeffrey Clyde Aidnik heard Judge John B. Ellis order him to return for a preliminary hearing setting at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 12 in the Justice Building in Vallejo.

At his latest proceeding, the 58-year-old Aidnik was represented by Deputy Public Defender Jeannette Garcia and was denied prior felonies and enhancements. Deputy District Attorney Ilana Shapiro has previously represented the DA’s Office.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Bruce Flynn filed the criminal complaint on May 15.

Aidnik faces a felony murder charge, plus enhancements for being a previously convicted felon, and a misdemeanor resisting arrest charge.

The DA’s criminal complaint alleges Aidnik killed his mother “between May 10 and 13” in her Rio Vista home.

Solano County Jail records indicate Rio Vista police officers arrested Aidnik at 5:30 p.m. May 13 in the 500 block of Birch Ridge Drive. He was booked into jail without bail early the following morning.

Rio Vista Police Chief Jon Mazer confirmed that officers took Aidnik into custody after the body of his mother was discovered in a Trilogy home the day before.

According to Mazer, Rio Vista police officers responded to a request for a welfare check at the home.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered the suspect, and after a brief struggle, the suspect was arrested with minor injuries (but) no officers were injured during the arrest,” said Mazer.

Officers then discovered the body of a 78-year-old woman inside the home. She was later identified as Aidnik’s mother, according to Mazer.

Rio Vista officers requested the help of the Solano County Sheriff’s Office detectives and crime scene investigators, who responded to the scene a short time later, Mazer said, adding, at the time, that circumstances surrounding the woman’s death remained under investigation.
