Celtics’ Baylor Scheierman ‘Shuts Down’ Jaylen Brown With Post

One of the keys to this Boston Celtics season, in addition to the MVP-caliber season put up by Jaylen Brown, the coaching of Joe Mazzulla, and the dramatic return of Jayson Tatum, has been the way that the Celtics role players have shown out. There is a group that has taken their first years of development behind the scenes of more talented teams in the past two seasons and, now that they’re being counted on after the Celtics have had to cut ties with past stars, have shown that they are up to the task.

Center Neemias Queta has been one, as has Jordan Walsh. Two new guys–Hugo Gonzalez and Luka Garza–have done the same. But the only first-round pick among the group has been Baylor Scheierman, the 30th overall pick from the 2024 draft, who ahs found ways to contribute throughout the year, over 77 games and 20 starts.

On Sunday in the Celtics’ Game 4 win over the Sixers to go up 3-1 in the first-round series, Scheierman made two 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds in 14 minutes, all of which led to a rather amusing exchange with Brown himself.

Celtics’ Jaylen Brown: ‘We Call Him Big-Shot Bob’

After the win in Philadelphia, Brown was asked about Scheierman, and claimed that the team had given the second-year guy out of Creighton an eye-opening nickname.

Here’s what Brown had to say on the topic of Baylor Scheierman: “Baylor’s been big-time. You know, we call him Big-Shot Bob around here, just makes timely plays, timely baskets and those rebounds are big for us, so like, he has been—his development has been great as well. It’s kind of like sometimes it is falling under the radar with all the other guys that we have but Baylor has been very significant for our success.

“And tonight was an example of just how, just in his minutes, he just won every little play and on top of that, made some big-time shots. So, big-time game from Baylor.”

Baylor Scheierman: No You Don’t

Certainly, this is not the first time that Brown has been complimentary of the Celtics young role players. But … Big-Shot Bob? That would be a reference to the great Robert Horry, who was a role player for the Lakers and Spurs (among others) and was known for his right-place/right-time shots that won some of the most dramatic games in recent NBA playoff history.

Scheierman is not exactly on that level. And, on Monday, Scheierman took to Twitter/X to note that no one on the Celtics actually calls him that.

Wrote Scheierman: “JB is my guy but I gotta shut this one down lol. I’ve never been called nor called myself this once! Appreciate the love though JB.”

And, well, humility is a big part of this Celtics team’s identity, so it should not be a surprise that Scheierman was reluctant to accept the Horry comparison. But if he continues on the path he has been on in recent days–he is shooting 46.2% from the 3-point line in the series against the Sixers–Scheierman might find the new nickname sticks.
