Catching a “never-seen-one-this-big” drum at Belmont Harbor

Adrian Medina messaged Saturday evening that his buddy Clifford Piao caught a massive drum at Belmont Harbor.

“Never seen one this big,” Medina messaged.

The freshwater drum topped 20 pounds on a handheld scale. Freshwater drum are commonly known as sheephead and, down South, as Gaspergoo.

“We never seen one that big in person, he was casting a Marabou Jig for kings and that hit!” Medina messaged.

For an idea how big freshwater drum can grow in Illinois, Johnathan Inman caught the state record of 38 pounds, 4 ounces on May 24, 2018 from Clinton Lake.

FOTW, the celebration of big fish and their stories (the stories matter) around Chicago fishing, runs Wednesdays in the paper Sun-Times.
