Canadiens Rumors: Habs Kicking Tires on Flyers D-Man

The hype around the Montreal Canadiens rumors is finally starting to feel awfully real leading up to the 2026 NHL trade deadline. There’s a sense that Montreal is at a point where pulling the trigger could make a difference down the stretch and into the postseason.

The focus throughout most of the season has been on adding a top-six forward and a defenseman. And that’s what the latest round of chatter has honed in on.

As such, the most recent Canadiens rumors have focused on Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. Moreover, after a strong showing at the Olympics for Team Finland, his stock has risen significantly. Such a situation has led teams to consider adding him for a playoff run.

Canadiens Rumors Link Montreal to Ristolainen

Ristolainen has to be one of the most tantalizing Canadiens rumors. The 31-year-old defenseman isn’t flashy, but he’s built a reputation as a rugged, hard-minutes player. He blocks shots, throws hits, and doesn’t shy away from heavy matchups. In other words, he’s the kind of player the Habs have been looking to shore up their defense corps.

According to Marco D’Amico of RG Media, the Canadiens reached out to the Flyers to at least see what it would take. The conversation, however, didn’t last long. That detail matters, as the Habs might end up circling back before March 6 rolls around. However, that doesn’t seem likely given the high asking price the Flyers have on Ristolainen.

Not long after that report surfaced, insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned that Montreal had indeed touched base with Philadelphia about Ristolainen. Friedman confirmed that the Habs and the Flyers had only exchanged brief information on Ristolainen’s availability. While Friedman confirmed these Canadiens rumors, he didn’t exactly dismiss the idea that a deal would not actually happen.

As noted, the sticking point appears to be the asking price. The Flyers aren’t in the business of giving away a veteran defenseman with size and experience, and Montreal isn’t in the mood to overpay by sending a high-end prospect. That’s where things likely stalled.

Canadiens Sticking to their Guns at the Deadline

If anything, these Canadiens rumors say more about Montreal’s mindset than about any single player. The organization has been deliberate throughout its rebuild. Draft picks are valued. Prospects are protected. Every move is measured against the bigger picture.

Sure, Ristolainen could help. But at what cost? That’s the question GM Kent Hughes has to wrestle with this time of year. A first-round pick? A young roster player? Something more? If the price starts creeping into uncomfortable territory, it’s just best to hang up the phone. Simple as that.

The Canadiens aren’t desperate. They’re competitive, they’re improving, and they’re building something that feels sustainable. Adding depth makes sense. Forcing a deal doesn’t.

As the deadline approaches, expect more Canadiens rumors to surface. That’s just how this works. Some names will stick. Others will fade as quickly as they appear. But if this brief Ristolainen inquiry says anything, it’s that Montreal is exploring, carefully, strategically, and without panic. Restraint might be the smartest move of all, given how the Habs are looking to build a long-term plan without succumbing to the temptation of short-term fixes.
