Caleb Malhotra Top Choice for Home Team in 2026 NHL Draft

The Vancouver Canucks faced a massive letdown following the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery. The Canucks entered the draw with the best chance of claiming the top pick, but walked away third. That’s actually a good thing, as it allows the organization to take a hometown prospect: Caleb Malhotra.

Malhotra, the son of current Abbotsford Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra, is a natural choice for the Canucks. And he’s also ranked among this year’s best prospects. The Athletic’s recent mock draft showed the Toronto Maple Leafs taking Gavin McKenna first overall, with the San Jose Sharks picking Ivar Stenberg second.

The Canucks, third, would take Caleb Malhotra. But it’s not just the hometown connection that fuels this assertion. It’s that Malhotra is actually the best center prospect in the 2026 NHL Draft.

As Thomas Drance wrote, the upside of Malhotra is just too good to ignore.

“Malhotra, however, has been on a rocket ship trajectory late in his draft year, morphing into a top offensive producer for Brantford down the stretch and into the OHL playoffs. He’s 6-2, he has plus wheels, he’s a conscientious, physically assertive two-way centre, and his production down the stretch has begun to draw comparisons to Jonathan Toews from his biggest admirers in the scouting community.”

Drance’s comments underline the comparison between Caleb Malhotra and Chase Reid. Reid is a defenseman and could get serious consideration from the Canucks. But based just on Drance’s comments, the choice to take Malhotra isn’t really that hard.

Caleb Malhotra Excited to Join the Vancouver Canucks

Meanwhile, the prospect of joining the Vancouver Canucks is something that appeals significantly to the second-generation hockey star.

Mark Masters posted a quote from Caleb Malhotra, in which the prospect declared his excitement at the idea of playing in his hometown.

Given just how excited Malhotra would be about joining the organization, and his father in the process, the Canucks don’t really have much to think about.

But there’s one other key issue to keep in mind moving forward.

Canucks Actually Need Another Top-Six Center

Picking Caleb Malhotra isn’t really a feel-good moment. Yes, there is a genuine connection between Malhotra and the Canucks.

But there’s another powerful reason for picking Malhotra: The Canucks need another top-six center. That’s a situation that became apparent this season. The team’s depth down the middle took a significant hit with the injuries to Filip Chytil and Marco Rossi.

Plus, Elias Pettersson’s relative inconsistency made it challenging for him to hold down a top-line role. That situation forced the club to sign David Kampf, who didn’t quite fill the void. Kampf eventually became a trade deadline casualty.

That’s why adding Caleb Malhotra would give the Canucks another young, top-six center. A one-two punch of Rossi and Malhotra would look like a good place to start. A healthy Chytil and a potentially serviceable Pettersson could make Vancouver a solid team down the middle.

Unless one of Toronto or San Jose takes Malhotra, it seems he’ll be earmarked to join his childhood team following the 2026 NHL Draft.
